Cancer Screening (FIT)

FIT Colorectal Cancer Screening Kits

Colorectal cancer home screening kits and services, known as Fecal Immunochemical Testing or “FIT” kits, are available to qualifying persons.

The test is non-invasive and requires no bowel prep or dietary restrictions. Stool samples are collected at home, and the completed kit is mailed to TCHD in a postage-paid envelope. Results are generated immediately upon receipt of the kit, and the client is contacted with a result and recommendations for follow-up as needed.

Prevalence

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most prevalent type of cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States. A person’s lifetime risk of developing colorectal cancer is 1 in 20. Although CRC is one of the deadliest forms of cancer it can be cured if caught early or prevented all together. The greatest risk factor of colorectal cancer is the failure to be screened. For many reasons people are resistant to the idea of having a colonoscopy. Fortunately, this kit is an alternative.

Eligibility

The criteria for eligibility are:

  • Between 45 and 75 years of age
  • No colonoscopy within the last 10 years
  • No sigmoidoscopy within the last 5 years
  • No history of colon cancer, colon resection, or colon disease
  • No home colorectal cancer screening within the last year

FIT kits can be picked up by appointment during clinic hours. The cost of the kit is $10
