Children, parents, business and community leaders will come together to “Fall In Love with Afterschool” on October 25th from 4 – 6:00 pm at a Lights On Afterschool rally at the Avanti’s Dome in Pekin.  Celebrating the achievements of afterschool students and drawing attention to the need for more afterschool programs to serve the millions of children nationwide who are unsupervised and at risk each weekday afternoon are the goals.

Tazewell County’s Lights On Afterschool participants attend 18 different sites.  The 300 children, along with their families, will enjoy inflatable bounce houses & slides, adventure carts, pet care demonstrations, safety presentations by Pekin Police Dept. & more.

“Lights On Afterschool received funding from the Pekin Rotary to focus on literacy,” says Stacie Ealey, Director of Community Health programs at Tazewell County Health Department.  “The children will receive a new book to encourage them to “fall in love with reading”.  Our afterschool programs keep children safe, inspire them to learn, and relieve working parents of worries about how their children spend their afternoons.”

“Lights On Afterschool celebrates the remarkable work being done by students who attend our afterschool programs. It is a powerful reminder that afterschool programs offer a range of supports to children and families,” said Ealey.  “There's no reason that learning should stop at 3 p.m., particularly if the alternative is unsupervised time in front of a television set, or any of the dangerous or unhealthy behaviors that can ensnare children in the afternoons.”
