21st Century Schools provides
before and after school services in eighteen schools throughout the county. Program components focus on academics, life skills education,
parental involvement, service learning, positive adult mentors and
recreational/cultural activities.
The programs listed below served over 1800 students in Tazewell County
throughout the 2007-2008 school year. The programs are run as a partnership
between the Tazewell County Health Department, the individual school and school
district.
Extended Day
This structured latch key program is offered mornings and afternoons
each day that school is in session. Hours of operation are 6:30 am - start of
school and school dismissal - 6:00 pm. The program includes breakfast, afternoon
snack, homework help , free play, as well as group games and activities. Fees
are collected to ensure program sustainability.
Enrichment
Enrichment brochures are sent out to students 4 times a year offering a
large variety of classes. These after school activities are offered both on and
off site and generally run for 6 - 8 week sessions. Classes may include Spanish,
Swim Lessons, Martial Arts, Creative Crafts, Lego Lab, and much more. The
program includes afternoon snack and homework time before each activity. Fees
are collected to cover the cost of programming.
Homework Hangout
Homework Hangout is geared towards the older student. Students involved
in this after school program are able to receive extra help with homework
beginning at school dismissal. Once their work is complete, students are able to
use computers, play games, listen to music and hang out with their friends. The
program also includes an afternoon snack. Fees are collected to cover the cost
of programming.
Tutoring
This tutoring program allows for teachers and principals to select the
attendees. The guidelines vary, as they are set to meet the needs of each
school. Classroom teachers and/or assistants are generally hired to tutor the
students. Fees are charged on a sliding scale based on income.
IMSA
IMSA Excellence 2000+, a program of the Illinois Mathematics and Science
Academy, is designed for academically talented middle school students who are
interested and motivated in science and mathematics. Logic, mathematical and
experimental scientific thinking, and problem solving skills are the focus of
this non-competitive, student-centered program. Participants are required to pay
a tuition for this activity.
Summer Camp
Summer camp is designed to incorporate academics with fun for area
students exiting kindergarten through 6th grade. Each week, themed activities
will include crafts, reading, outdoor fun, field trips, and much more. Summer
camp runs every Monday through Friday from 6:30 am - 6:00 pm. Breakfast, lunch,
and snacks are provided. Fees are collected to ensure program sustainability.
